New Benue-Congo: a definition and proposed internal classification

It is a frequently voiced worry among researchers in particular branches of Niger-Congo that many recent developments in classification have either remained unpublished or have not been justified in print. This paper presents an outline of some current views, mainly from publications that are forthcoming, on the internal classification of Niger-Congo with an overview of its development and a summary of current nomenclature. Then it turns to the internal classification of the (New) Benue-Congo and puts forward a new classification of this language family of southern Nigeria, giving particular attention to new research into Bantoid. App. (1: The principal reconstructions justifying the major groupings; 2: Proposed hierarchical terminology in language classification), bibliogr., notes.
