The Organization of African Unity 1963-1988: a role analysis and performance review

The Silver Jubilee of the OAU in 1988 provides the occasion for this special issue in which the OAU’s role and performance during the first 25 years of its existence are examined. In the process, a broad range of policy issues, tasks and problems that have received the attention of the regional organization is covered. These include the OAU’s role as mediator in civil wars (article by Bukar BUKARAMBE), the Congo crisis of 1960-1964 (Tunde ADENIRAN), and the conflict situation in southern Africa (R.A. AKINDELE), the OAU and human rights (Osita C. EZE), the position of its administrative secretary-general (R.O. OGUNBAMBI), the OAU and the management of Africa’s economic crisis (R.O. OLANIYAN), and the function of the OAU in the United Nations as an instrument of African diplomacy (K. MATHEWS). R.A. AKINDELE deals more generally with the concepts of international regionalism and world order, and with ideological debates on issues of continental political order-building in Africa. Adekunle AJALA describes the circumstances surrounding the setting up of the OAU, G.O. OLUSANYA reflects on the first 25 years, and H. Assisi ASOBIE makes projections for the OAU in the year 2000. A select and partially annotated bibliography of 713 titles (R.T. OKOTORE) completes the issue. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
