Food and Food Consumption in the Richtersveld: An Overview

In this article specific reference is made to aspects of change and continuity regarding food and food consumption in the Richtersveld. From the 19th to the 20th century there was a marked change in the subsistence economy of the people in the Richtersveld in the north-western corner of the Cape Province. Where the traditional subsistence economy was characterised by pastoralism, the present economy is based on cash obtained mainly as a result of migrant labour. This in itself has a direct effect on food and food consumption. The analysis is firstly, then, historically based, and is secondly conducted within the framework of the present subsistence economy.
