The author examines the various strategies for survival of Gambia since its independence in 1965: 1) the strategy that seeks to create at home a political situation which encourages compromise or co-optation; 2) the strategy of utilization the traditional technique of manipulation of the conflicts among big power neighbours by smaller states (Commonwealth circle; Western circle; rest of Africa).
