Igbo traditional poetry and family relationships

Two purposes, entertainment and social functionality, make literature a significant factor in the social life of Igbo traditional community Social functionality ranges from ritual, through demonstration of accepted values, to simple moral and ethical education. Emphasis is placed consistently on the social relationships between man. In this article poems are discussed, representing several kinds of relationships; relationship in the immediate community – general relationships in the family – child-parent relationship – relationship between brothers.
